Criticism Vs Feedback

Criticism Vs Feedback

We all have to give feedback. It may be to an intern, an employee, a child, or to your spouse who has done something you consider to be wrong. People break eggs, and it's up to us to give feedback. Here's a key tip - ensure you’re giving feedback and not just criticizing someone.

What’s the difference? Criticism invalidates a person, it offers nothing beyond - you have done something wrong, or you are wrong. It makes the person feel badly about themselves or look foolish. Feedback on the other hand is about acknowledging what's good and how it can be better. It's constructive and that makes it a two-way conversation. We respond differently to criticism than we do to feedback. This is because the feedback process allows for different ways of doing things and seeking the best way for everyone involved.
